Healing Anxiety A Tibetan Medicine Guide to Healing Anxiety, Stress and PTSD (9780991236664) Mary Friedman Ryan PhD Books Reviews

As soon as you pick this book up it captures your interest with case histories, unlike the standard formula for all books now where they start off with the boring history of the subject matter. It continues in an understandable format that even the lay person can comprehend and put to use the many suggestions and examples of various ways anxiety can be triggered. I'm a long time student and practitioner (60+ years) of all kinds of therapies and I learned a tremendous amount from this book and wish it had been available when I was still in practice.
Anyone who has studied for four years as an apprentice and research partner to the Dalai Lama’s doctor knows things. Of course, Mary Ryan is also a diplomate in Chinese Medicine and has many years of clinical practice and teaching under her belt. I really enjoyed and benefitted from reading this book. Ryan’s story and observations, the fascinating case studies, and the clear guidance of an experienced practitioner make for a good read and offers practical info that you can apply immediately. The photos and illustrations are wonderful. This is an accessible and very hands-on book, one I have referred back to many times since first reading it.
I was drawn to this book…
I don’t usually do reviews, but I felt motivated to share. This is an amazing book. It is full of so many good things. Simple and clear to understand yet also profound and deep. It is hard to explain, but this book just resonated with me on so many levels. Also, the book is beautiful. I recommend this book to anyone who is stressed-out or anxious…wait, I recommend this to the whole world! Everyone needs the healing advice from the Tibetans... well worth the price. Thank you!
In this book, the author writes about the ancient Tibetan methods of calming and healing the body, mind, and spirit of people who struggle with health-debilitating bouts of anxiety. The information is presented in a way that is accessible to anyone. The book is laid out in an easy-to-follow order that addresses each part of the highly successful treatment plan, including chapters on personality types, diet, exercise, message, and mindfulness meditation as well as the prescribed treatments of acupuncture or acupressure. If you or someone you know suffers from episodes of anxiety, this book will be invaluable. Rosie P.
A clear, leisurely, informative book, chock-a-block with information and illustrated practical applications written by Mary Ryan PhD who, on her way to becoming a doctor in the Western tradition, was so inspired by her observation of a Tibetan doctor who perfectly diagnosed 12 patients whom he had never seen before, that she changed her focus from Western medicine to Tibetan. Anxiety or rLung in Tibet is not treated with medication as it is in the U.S. but with changes in lifestyle and nutrition and the use of herbal remedies which are carefully tailored to each patient's constitution and underlying disposition. Case histories of cure and improvement of patients encountered by Mary Ryan in her training with Dr. [Lady] Dadhon Jamling in Dharamsala are recounted in the book's first section. From histories of Western patients we learn that medication is frequently diminished, sometimes given up altogether when introduced to the Tibetan way that seeks to find the underlying imbalance producing the symptoms rather than just prescribing to predetermined sets of treatments.
The second part of the book, offering illustrated demonstrations for recipes, massage and exercise is just as interesting.
As the author says, these methods are not substitutes for medical care but they do offer increased agency to sufferers of anxiety and more natural solutions to the problem.
Highly informative book with lots of important information for all health practitioners to learn to support their clients.
This book is so well written and clear and interesting...about a topic I knew almost nothing about! It's so personal and useful for so many people. I don't even have anxiety, but wanted to see what that was all about for my friends who do. I'm going to recommend the book for others who need it!
Excellent book. I have been searching for different ways to handle anxiety and this was perfect. I was not familiar with Tibetan medicine and this was just perfect for me. The emphasis on knowing yourself and your body and simple methods and exercises and even recipes and getting into techniques of massage covered all the important aspects of becoming more aware of how Tibetan medicine can help. As opposed to other books, this one is well illustrated, refreshing and covers all the bases and serves as a guide for continued use of the techniques described.
